"Premium 2011" rice achieves high yield and stress resistance through wild rice genetics.

"Premium 2011" breaks late-season rice planting challenges, yielding over 500 kg per mu.
Recently, in the rice fields of Fulong Village, Dongge Town, Wenchang, young rice plants are growing vigorously, creating a scene of abundant harvest. The new rice variety "Te You 2011", developed over many years by the Tropical Wild Rice Germplasm Innovation and Utilization Team at the Institute of Grain Crops, Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, is gaining farmers' favor for its exceptional stress resistance and high yield performance.
This variety combines the strong resistance from our wild rice native to Hainan with improved adaptability through crossbreeding with cultivated rice.Yan Xiaowei, a researcher at the Rice Research Institute of Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, explained that the parent lines of "Te You 2011" originate from wild rice in Hainan. The team identified and screened germplasm resources containing resistance genes from wild rice, then improved them through crossbreeding with cultivated rice to ultimately develop this variety. In 2023, "Premium 2011" was approved by Hainan Province and entered large-scale promotion in 2025.
Yan Xiaowei explained that the standout feature of "Premium 2011" is its dual resilience—tolerating both low temperatures and cold dampness, as well as withstanding high heat and humidity.Hainan experiences frequent low temperatures and rainy weather from 12 to the following year's 3, then rapidly enters a high-temperature period after 3. This variety demonstrates high and stable yields under both extreme climate conditions. It demonstrates strong resistance to rice blast under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, as confirmed through multi-year, multi-location trials.Additionally, during the late season, "Special Grade 2011" demonstrated strong wind resistance, making it well-suited for Hainan's typhoon-prone periods.
In Fulong Village, Dongge Town, Wenchang, grower Han Huiping praised the "Special Premium 2011" variety: "This cultivar has strong disease resistance, high yield, good lodging resistance, and excellent taste. That's why we chose to continue growing it."She told reporters that this year, the cooperative planted 50 mu of "Special Premium 2011", achieving a yield of 600 kg per mu. The wet rice was sold directly to drying plants, ensuring stable income.
Han Hui Ping also noted that farmers were previously reluctant to plant late-season rice due to frequent typhoons, heavy rainfall, and high risks. However, the introduction of "Special Premium 2011" has changed this situation.Even in the late season, this variety maintains a yield of over 500 kg per mu, significantly improving land use efficiency.
Experts from the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences stated that the successful breeding of "Special Premium 2011" not only highlights the invaluable value of Hainan's wild rice resources but also provides strong support for ensuring food security and promoting the development of efficient tropical specialty agriculture.
